What's the Point in Life?

Life is full of pain, fear and confusion. It’s not easy. Whether you’re a monarch or a peasant. A man or a woman. Young or old. Yet, the world is full of glory too. Of true happiness. Of love. And it’s up to each one of us to build our own path. Because no matter who you are, or where you’re from, your life — and its purpose — is unique.

Still, does any of this matter if all you might know and feel is sadness? When anger seems to ride you like an untamable beast, never relenting until it lashes out? Or when grief overcomes you. Filling you with such despair, and hopeless dread, that there doesn’t seem to be a point to any of it... What’s the actual point in life, then?

Read on to find out, as “the light at the end of the tunnel” is not just an overused metaphor. A silver lining is not just a cliché, but a literal truth (there cannot be any clouds, dark as they may be, without some starlight shining on them somewhere). The truth is, heaven and hell do exist. It’s just a matter of choosing which one your life will be. Depression is real, but so is bliss. You can have your Nirvana, if you fight.

So what do you truly care about? Maybe the source of your pain can be what gives your life meaning, like when someone loses a loved one to a disease, and then spends their life trying to find a cure. Or seeking to protect those who have fallen to crime, or injustices of the law. Maybe you're obsessed with truth, or with creating something that makes the world a better place. Your pain is your power.

For most people, if they had to choose an easy life vs a difficult one, they’d choose the easy one. Makes sense. Why make things complicated, when life is already difficult... But for how long does this last, before major challenges find our way? Choosing the difficult path — facing our fears and moving past them — is the best way to live the life of your dreams. All you have to do is figure out what you want.

Listen. Yes, life would be so much easier without difficult challenges. But would we really learn much at all without them? Furthermore, how amazing does it feel when you finally get past a big obstacle... Like a major test at school, an important promotion at work, or a discovery in the research lab. The equivalent of hiking a treacherous rocky mountain in time to see the sunrise can be achieved every day.

So the question is — are you willing to fight to bring your own Nirvana to reality?

Look, our time on this planet is incredibly limited. Humans live the equivalent of a second (in the relative scheme of things) when compared to the age of our world. A few decades go by very, very fast. And before you know it, you will be long dead.

Per Mark Twain’s apocryphal words, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines! Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover!” Whether Twain said this is uncertain, yet this quote has survived for over a century, for a reason... Regrets are usually what we didn’t do.

If you’re not sure what to do with your life right now, that’s fair. There are an infinite amount of paths ahead of you. Logic — which often leads to overthinking — will only take you so far. You will need to feel, really feel, what it is you want... Consider what makes you feel happy. What makes you smile. Even if it’s just a dream, a crazy idea, or someone on the other side of the world. This is worth fighting for.

In the end, you will be glad for taking the chances that felt right. It could be a crazy notion, such as climbing the scariest volcanoes in the world, taking on the most corrupt companies, or founding a great company that could help people thrive.

Whatever it is you choose, no matter how small or big, is what your life is all about.
